Udalguri Relief 2008 case studies

Jamuna Biswas is from a Bengali background staying in Hidakhuwa village with her husband and three children. Both Jamuna and her husband have a hearing problem which makes them sometimes paralyzed.

On the incidence day Jamuna was laying her children to sleep when she heard some sound outside. As she has a hearing problem she was not able to hear and understand the sound clearly and so she didn’t give much interest on it. But when the sound grew louder and louder she came out of her house and saw everyone was running. Her sister in law came to her house and asked and helped her to carry her three children and go in a safety place because her husband went for work.

They are now staying at the relief camp and her family was allowed to stay in a separate camp because her husband was suffering from small pox and so that the germs doesn’t spread to other camper extra care was provided by the Relief committee their and the local nurse is also their everyday providing medicines to the sick people out the in the camp.

She gave a cute smile and said “I am very happy that the organization have thought about us and given us these warm clothes which are very much necessary for us because we are nit being able to carry any clothes along with us.”

Puspa was staying at the Relief Camp at Rowta Balisiahabi Camp. She is from the village called  Hidakhuwa she stay with her Husband two sons , two daughter- in laws and two daughters. Her husband and sons run the family by doing daily wages labour and also sometime pull thala.

When she was inside her home with her daughters she heard some noise and came out of her house and she saw that people are running and some houses are also on fire. She took her daughters and daughters in law and ran along with all the other people for safety.

Now she is safe at the relief camp with her family. She said “My husband and sons has gone to the field for harvesting the crops for if we don’t cut the crops we would have nothing to eat, it is risky to go to the field at this situation my husband need to be extra alert because no one knows if the opposition party may come and attack them at the field. We women are also not safe to go back to our homes because I have two young daughters and the opposition party has threaten my son that if we go there they will cut us and kill us. There is also no proper security provided by the police so we are in fear and not being able to prepare ourself strong.”

Jogeswar Boro was staying in the village called Dolgaon Batabari with his parents and wife and two children. He earns his livelihood by driving Sumo in the local village. He and his family was one of the victims of the Communal Violence of Udalguri and are now still staying with his family at Rowta College Relief Camp. On the Violence day he took his family and other neighbors and put them in the truck and took them at the police station. He was again returning back to his village to see if anyone is left out and as he was coming out of his house some people came out of a maruti van and tried to kill him but he manage to run away from their but still got cut in his head and was admitted to the hospital by the police. He stayed at the hospital for 2 days and after that retuned to the camp to stay with his family. He and his family were safe at the camp and are taken good care by the Committee.  He and other villagers sometimes goes to their village to see whether they would be able to stay their again and start their livelihood again but they were always chased out by the Muslim groups there. So now they were hopeless and in fear and were not being able to see their future and as all there houses were being burnt down and were also financially so weak to construct a new home. But still if the government and the police give them the help and security from the communal group they will be able to start their life.

He and his family were very much happy and thankful to the Organisation for helping them at this time of need. He was not being able to carry any warm clothes for his family and children from his house during that time and was also not being able to go for work because, if the Muslims saw any non Muslim local people from that place they stop their vehicle and bits them and so he has no money to buy any clothes for his family and children.
